Maria von Bach
Marie Emilie Baroness von Bach
Vienna, 11 March 1896 – 1978

Music played a central role in her family, with ancestors such as the composer Otto Bach and connections to figures such as Johannes Brahms and Gustav Klimt. She received piano and violin lessons from an early age and won several prizes.

She began composing in 1914, initially writing piano pieces and songs. From 1919 to 1925, she studied under Joseph Marx at the Vienna Academy of Music and Performing Arts. Her work was influenced by late Romanticism and Impressionism. She enjoyed her first success with the ‘Narrenlieder’ (1921). This was followed by sonatas, chamber music and orchestral works, which also gained recognition in Germany.

In 1940, Maria met the Italian painter Arturo Ciacelli and discovered the art of collage, which she practised successfully. Following Ciacelli’s death in 1966, she temporarily lost her creative drive, but later resumed composing.

In 1962 she was awarded a gold medal for her string quartet, and in 1976 she was conferred the title of professor. Her estate is held at the Town Hall Library.
